So you want to know how and why the Vietnam War ended?
Casualties were huge both for the Vietnamese people and the American people. A few thousands of Vietnamese people died in the Tet Offensive, which was a planned attack on the American embassy on the Vietnamese New Year’s Eve. Only a few hundred Americans died that evening. In general 2-5.7 mil. Vietnamese people died and around 52 thousand Americans were slaughtered in the war.
We all know that the Americans pulled out, but why?
The USA pulled out of Vietnam in 1975 because President Nixon was beginning to be unpopular in the USA. At first he wanted to pull out the troops slowly so that the South Vietnamese people could take control, but that didn’t go well. The North Vietnamese took control over South Vietnam again. President Nixon ordered some bombings and these bombings made the American population angry so he had to pull the troops out of Vietnam immediately. In other words Nixon pulled the troops out of Vietnam because the media and the population pushed on.
A funny thing about President Nixon was that he was trying to make the Vietnamese people afraid him. He actually wanted them to believe that he was greedy for power and could trigger a new bombing anytime he wanted to. Nixon’s plan was to become unpredictable from the Vietnamese people’s point of view. You could say that Nixon pretended to be ready to do all he had to win. The Vietnamese people said “screw him” and became more unpredictable than President Nixon pretended to be. In a way they became more hostile of it. This is called The Madman Theory.
